Cold therapy can be everything from an ice pack on your knee after football practice, to an ice bath after stretching from an explosive workout (you don’t want to do it right after your workout, stretch first).
Cold water therapy has been around for along time but has been recently brought into the mainstream with Wim Hoff and his cold therapy and breathing programs.
I am currently a student of both and can stay they are a great investment. The Othership breath work app also has some great guided breath work to do while in the cold plunge. I will place their link below. They are awesome and super high vibe, I use their app every morning.
You can start with turning the water to cold for the last 30 seconds of your shower. You will slowly progress to taking a full 3 minute cold shower.
And then when your budget and space allows build your own cold water therapy with a sealed chest freezer and a thermostat. I use mine every morning and feel amazing!
I have created a free course demonstrating how to build your own cold plunge at home, I will place the link below🥶
Lets unpack some of the benefits of this magical…FREE at home therapy you can utilize any time you want…:)
It can reduce muscle inflammation:
Delayed onset muscle soreness (doms) is what occurs a couple days after you have an Epic high intensity workout. When you push your muscles past what they are used to, microscopic tears occur in the fibers and inflammation of the tissue.
It has been scientifically proven that cold water therapy helps to reduce these effects.
The cold reduces the temperature of the damaged tissue and constricts blood vessels. Swelling and inflammation are reduced as the nerve endings become numb reducing pain to the area.
"A couple that gets cold together...grows old together"...🙂(Losure)
It improves your circulation:
When circulation is not good your heart becomes stressed, and blood flow is compromised. Poor circulation can also lead to headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, muscle cramping, and even heart attack.
Good circulation improves and increases your mental performance, improves your heart health, boosts your immune system, and increases your energy level.
Cold water immersion, exercise, and healthy nutrition are the trifecta of improving your circulation. How the cold water helps your circulation is that you submerge yourself into the water, blood rushes to surround your vital organs. Your heart then pumps more efficiently sending nutrients and oxygen to your whole body.
It improves your Lymphatic and Immune systems:
Your lymphatic system is one that runs through your body, and helps clean you out. It takes microbes from your cells, bacteria, and waste. This system relies on muscle contraction to work though. So if lead a sedentary life or don’t exercise, you are not properly cleaning out your lymphatic system. When this occurs you will build up toxins in your body, which may lead to infection, joint pain, colds, and icky disease.
When you submerge yourself into the cold water your lymph vessels contract, forcing your body to pump fluids throughout your body, flushing the icky fluids and waste out of the area.
When this occurs, the immune system is alerted and the white blood cells attack and destroy all of the icky.
It can facilitate weight loss:
Cold water therapy can increase your whole body metabolic rate by 16% when consistently practiced.
When you change your body external temperature your internal temperature reacts as well and has to work to increase, this increases your metabolic rate to create heat, thus possibly creating weight loss.
It can create a sense of wellbeing:
When you expose yourself to cold water you trigger mood-boosting neurotransmitters, which induce happiness. Cold water therapy has also been proven to reduce depression.
In some cases cold water immersion has also reduced prescription drug use, when practiced consistently. Nothing works unless you are patient and consistent :)
It can improve mental toughness:
Exposing yourself too cold water can be a very intimidating venture, mentally and physically. The power of the mind is an amazing avenue, and your body only knows what your mind is telling it.
When you set and achieve a goal be it mental, physical, or in this case both. You improve your toughness to yourself, increasing your mental and or physical toughness in any situation. You can start with cold water, and then apply this toughness to any part of your life. Boom!…:)
It can reset your temperature regulating system:
Do you suffer from being chronically cold? Does it always seem chilly?
You could keep putting more sweatshirts on, or you can do something about it, naturally. Cold water therapy is a great way to help reset your temperature regulating system.
After years of depending on external sources of heat your body becomes accustomed to you just turning up the thermostat. You can reset this with consistent cold water therapy.
It boosts human growth hormone:
HGH is produced by the pituitary gland. It helps regulate body composition, body fluids, bone and muscle growth, and your metabolism. HGH is what helped you with your growth spurts as a teenager. It is also what is going to help keep you younger as you age. Numerous studies have shown that consistent cold water therapy help to increase the production of human growth hormone.
It burns brown fat (adipose) in your body:
When you expose your body to cold water therapy your stem cells form brown fat instead of white fat. Studies have shown that brown fat causes your body to burn extra calories to keep warm. So when your body is burning brown fat you are essentially burning off excess body fat.
It increases testosterone in men (up to 490%)
When your body is exposed to cold water therapy it releases a lot of different survival proteins to prevent muscle tissue from wasting away. One of the great benefits of this is a boost of the muscle-building hormone testosterone.
