We will start with the history, move to some of the many benefits, and then explain how to oil pull at home and which oils to use.
We will also have many popular questions and answers in the Q and A section at the bottom of the blog.
So what exactly is oil pulling already?!?
Lets find out…
THE HISTORY OF OIL PULLING:
Oil pulling started in India as part of healing practices described in ancient Ayurveda texts, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that was formed around 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. (Live Science)
Original practitioners of oil pulling used sunflower and sesame oils as a way to prevent bleeding gums, decay, dryness of throat, oral malodor, cracked lips and for strengthening teeth, gums and the jaw.
Gandusha and Kavala Graha are traditional oil pulling practices that have different processes. In Gandusha the mouth is filled with oil, which is held in the mouth for three to five minutes then spit out. In Kavala Graha, only a comfortable amount of oil is placed in the mouth. Then the oil is held inside the mouth for three minutes, gargled and spit out. (Live Science)
So essentially you are using a certain oil (which we will discuss in the how to section below) swishing it around your mouth for three to twenty minutes, and spitting it out. Make sure you spit the oil in a trash can and not down the drain, or you will clog your pipes with oil.
Your mouth is essentially a road map for your body. If you are having oral health issues oil pulling will help to detox your mouth and body, but you also want to look at other choices you are making that may not be the healthiest you can make. Nutrition, exercise, major detoxing, etc.
Know let’s move on to the reasons we would swish oil in our mouth…:)
THE BENEFITS OF OIL PULLING:
Oil pulling seems to reduce inflammation and improve gum health:
Gingivitis is a type of gum disease marked by swollen, red gums that tend to bleed easily.
The bacteria found in plaque are one of the major causes of gingivitis, and tend to cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums.
Oil pulling is a natural effective remedy to gingivitis because it improves gum health and reduces inflammation. When you oil pull you reduce the amount of harmful plaque and bacteria in your mouth that contribute to gum disease such as Streptococcus mutant.
There have been numerous tests that confirm oil pulling leads to a decrease in plaque, and improvement in gingivitis, and a reduction in harmful bacteria of the mouth.
Oil pulling may help prevent cavities:
Eating too much sugar, a buildup of bacteria, and poor oral hygiene can all lead to tooth decay, which leads to holes forming in your teeth known as cavities. Plague is also a contributor to causing cavities. Plague forms a coating on your teeth and is comprised of bacteria, food particles and saliva. The bacteria begin to break down the food particles, in the process they form an acid that destroys tooth enamel and causes tooth decay.
Some studies have found that oil pulling decreases the number of harmful bacteria found in saliva and plaque, as effectively as mouthwash.
Through oil pulling you decrease these icky strains of bacteria helping to prevent tooth decay and reduce the risk of forming future cavities.
Oil pulling can kill harmful bacteria and detox your mouth:
There are over 700 different types of bacteria that may be living in your mouth. At any given time there are can be 350 different types in your mouth at once. Certain types of these icky bacteria contribute to gum disease, bad breath and tooth decay. Numerous studies have proven that oil pulling reduces the number of icky bacteria in your mouth.
20 children participated in a one week study in which some used oil pulling (coconut oil) and some used mouthwash. Both the coconut oil and mouthwash reduced the number of bad bacteria found in the children’s saliva and reduced plague.
By decreasing the bad bacteria in your mouth with oil pulling you are supporting good oral hygiene and naturally detoxing your mouth and body. Oil pulling is also believed by some to have a whitening effect on your teeth.
Oil pulling can reduce bad breath:
50% of the population is plagued with bad breath (also known as Halitosis). The most common causes for bad breath are poor oral hygiene, bacteria trapped on the tongue (tongue coating), infection and gum disease. Typical treatment of bad breath is an antiseptic mouthwash like chlorhexidine. Studies have proven that oil pulling is just as effective as these antiseptic mouthwashes at reducing bad breath. And oil pulling is all natural, even better. A study was conducted on 20 children with some rinsing with sesame oil, and some rinsing with chlorhexidine. Both had a significant decrease in the microorganisms associated with causing bad breath.
Oil pulling is an easy and cheap addition to your wellness toolbox:
The two best features about oil pulling are, its availability and easiness to add to your daily routine. You probably all ready have oil that you can oil pull with in your kitchen. Some example oils you can use are olive oil-which is known to help fight inflammation, and coconut oil which posses strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Oil pulling is an easy addition to your daily routine, simply set aside 10 to 20 minutes a day to swish around the goodness. You can also be doing stuff around the house while you are oil pulling, you don’t have to stay stationary. (Healthline)
Which oils to use in oil pulling:
You want to use organic clean oils for oil pulling. No processed bullshit and buy oils in glass containers if available. The most popular oils are olive oil, coconut oil, and sesame oil. Buy clean oils, and have a clean mouth…:)
How to oil pull:
Start with a clean organic sesame, coconut or olive oil.
Measure out the desired amount of oil you want. A good starting point is one tablespoon.
Swish the oil around in your mouth making sure not to swallow any. Strive for ten to twenty minutes.
Once you have reached your desired time be sure to spit the oil into a trash can and not down the drain. Daily oil pulling being spit down the drain will clog up your plumbing for sure.
Be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with some clean high vibe quality water.
You have just oil pulled! I know your mouth feels cleaner and better already…:)
