Welcome to the second week of our Limitless detox series. This week we will be discussing what your liver does, why you can’t live without it, and how to detox it so you can live your best life :)
So what exactly does your liver do? In a nutshell it filters everything you put into your body. It makes the toxins from daily life less harmful and removes them from the bloodstream. The liver is a hub/ cleaning center for your blood. By hub I mean that it tells what nutrients to go where, what needs to return into the bloodstream, and what needs to be exited from the body.
The liver also helps by storing awesome minerals and vitamins such as iron, copper, vitamins a, d,e, k and b12. it puts all of these back into the body when and if needed. The liver breaks down fats and proteins. Alcohol is also processed in the liver. Alcohol in excess for a prolonged time can lead to fatty liver disease.
When the liver is breaking down fats it produces bile to help in this process. This bile is used to help transport toxins and waste products. The bile is made in the liver but stored in the gallbladder. From here it is released into the stomach every time you consume fats.
The liver is also very important in the releasing of plasma proteins to help clot blood.
If your liver is overloaded with toxins and not healthy it not only effects itself, but many other essential organs as well. They include the heart, the lungs and the kidneys.
Not detoxing your liver would be pretty similar to not changing the oil in your car. Your liver filters everything you eat, breath, absorb through your skin...everything.
Let’s look at some of the triggers that can cause your liver to take a turn for the worse.
Excessive prolonged alcohol consumption
Eating a lot of processed food
Eating a lot of super processed food ( fast food, etc)
Environment: Constantly breathing in industrial pollution, cleaning products, herbicides, etc.
Dirty water:
Almost all tap water is contaminated. The government standards are worthless and outdated.
Using plastic products:
If you are still drinking water from a water bottle you are drinking in plastic with every sip. The way this water is bottled it releases chemicals into the water as soon as it is filled. I’m still not sure how this is legal. Also using plastic in the microwave or to cook with is not good for the old liver either. Whenever you apply heat to plastic you are releasing the toxic fumes right into your food or beverage.
Pharmaceuticals:
These western drugs should be just as illegal as plastic. These overprescribed pills only mask your symptoms and never address the root of these symptoms so you never fix the issue. In the process you are overwhelming your liver and other organs while compounding the problem. Western medicine and medication are only good for trauma, a car crash, etc. Not for preventing or fixing any health issue.
Frequent over the counter medication will overload your liver just the same. If you are on a daily regiment of any kind of pills that’s aren’t all natural herbs, maybe try and look to the root of the symptoms, this is where you can find and fix the issue.
We now know what is bad for the liver, so how do we detox and cleanse it back up to awesome?
You probably guessed it...with clean eating :) (Also a sweet cleanse from quicksilver scientific I will link to below.)
Eating a raw food diet for one week is super great to detox your liver. It gives it time to get all that icky out.
Also intermittent fasting. When you pair these two together you willl have the cleanest body ever!
Here is my current eating protocol:
I wake up to clean water and black coffee.
I drink clean water and stay active all day, keep that body moving.
I usually break my fast between 3pm and 4pm, and I will stop eating by 8pm. This gives my body and organs plenty of time to detox the icky when I’m not eating. And when I do eat I eat all organic vegetables and a little organic fruit (watch the sugar). Occasionally we will have clean meats with our dinner (grass fed, etc), but this only every once in a while. Organic clean roasted sunflower seeds, organic roasted pumpkin seeds, organic olive oil, and flaxseed oil are my new best friends. These foods are super high in fat and help me to get the fuel I need in my small eating window. I do like to rotate organic walnuts, almonds, and pine nuts into the protocol as well.
I am fat adapted, this is how I can fast for so long and not get hangry :) Fat adapted meaning my body runs super clean on good fats (not McDonalds) so when I don’t eat for awhile my body doesn’t freak out, it just burns excess fat on my body. It’s a pretty sweet deal.
