Blue Light Blocking Glasses? For Sure! Let's See The Benefits!
I remember growing up my Dad had a pair of amber sun glasses called blue blockers. I remember the infomercial like it was yesterday. It was one of the awesome cheesy 90’s ones. Like a 30 second Saturday night live skit…epic.
The reason I recall this is the blue blocker company may have been onto something and not even been aware of it.
One of the present day hot trends right now is to wear your blue light blocking glasses when sitting at a screen for a prolonged amount of time, or for an hour or two right before bed.
So what exactly are blue light backing glasses? Where did they come from? What are the benefits? Let’s go find some answers…:)
So where do blue light blocking glasses come from?
It may seem a little unbelievable but NASA scientists invented the blue light blocking glasses. Pretty wild right? :) The astronauts were complaining of insomnia and chronic exhaustion while in space. These astronauts could not keep a consistent sleep schedule.
After doing some investigating the scientists concluded it was the blue light disrupting the astronauts sleep cycles.
The NASA scientists then looked for a solution that would make the most sense for the tired astronauts. They examined a lot of different animals eyesight’s, especially the eagle. The eyesight of an eagle is 4 to 8 times as stronger than that of a human.
From a two mile distance an eagle can spot prey, even at high altitudes where blue lights are present.
Upon further examination the scientists learned the eyes of the eagle produce tiny oil droplets that selectively filter out the harmful rays, allowing certain waves only to pass through.
The NASA researchers studied and learned everything about the eyesight of the eagle. They then designed optic technology in perfect unison of the eagles eye. These new glasses were known as blue blockers.
These glasses were the first form of eyewear to block out harmful rays and increase vision resilience.
Blue light blockers were well known to the gamers of the 80’s and 90’s allowing them to play for hours and not have the headaches and insomnia of staring at a video screen.
With all of the screens available today blue light blocking glasses have gained a lot of popularity from people caring about their health and eyesight.
So how do blue light blockers work?
There are certain filters on the blue light blocking glasses (similar to the eagle’s eye) that keep out certain harmful rays and only let in the good rays of light through. Blue light blocking glasses also help to create a sharper image and reduce glare.
Who should be wearing blue light blocking glasses?
Pretty much everyone. Walk down the street and look around. Almost everyone is starring into their phone or device. Soaking up on all that blue light icky, keeping themselves in constant fight or flight, gross.
The public leaning on their devices is only going to gain more time as technology is progressed. Simply putting on blue light blocking glasses will help to relax your eyes keeping them from straining from the blue light rays coming from your device.
Blue light blockers will also help to improve your sleep. Here is how, when you see these harmful blue rays your brain subconsciously thinks it is day light outside and starts running your AM protocol. This is how blue light blocking glasses help to restore your sleep patterns.
I have two pairs of Swanwick blue light blocking glasses that I wear daily. One pair is for my work when I am using my Mac ( I have them on right now writing this blog post )they are more clear lenses with a slight yellow tint to them, and the other pair is a darker amber lens to signify more of nightfall.
These darker glasses let my brain now that it is “dark outside” and we will going to bed soon. I wear the amber glasses an hour or two before bed and sleep like a champ.
